Richard J. Berwanger, Jr. is a partner at Liff, Walsh & Simmons in the Litigation and Labor & Employment practice group, where he leads the firm’s Labor & Employment and Legal Ethics practices. His practice focuses specifically on general litigation and legal ethics matters and he covers a wide range of complex disputes, including commercial litigation, employment matters, estate and trust litigation, real estate disputes, and various liability cases.
In addition to his litigation work, Richard advises attorneys and law firms on ethics, risk management, and practice management issues. He also defends lawyers facing disciplinary and grievance proceedings and handles insurance coverage matters, with significant experience in professional liability coverage disputes.
Before joining Liff, Walsh & Simmons, Richard was a partner at Frost Law and earlier practiced at a reputable regional insurance defense firm. Throughout his career, he has represented professionals in malpractice, disciplinary, and complex litigation matters. He regularly speaks and advises on legal ethics and practice management topics, drawing on his extensive litigation experience.
He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Baltimore School of Law and his M.B.A from the University of Baltimore Merrick School of Business. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Maryland. Richard is admitted to practice in Maryland, the District of Columbia, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Committed to his community, Richard serves on the Boards of the Anne Arundel Bar Association and the Indian Hills Swim Team. He lives in the Annapolis area with his wife, two children, and golden retriever. In his free time, he enjoys time on the water, cheering on the Ravens, Orioles, and Terps, and pursuing his love of golf.
